she was his rat
he had set the trap
with his thoughts
his words
and she
she had built the cage
the heart cage
with her need      
with her want
the door of the cage
stayed open
no need to shut
each word of his
each insinuation
each implication
of each word of his
kept the rat there
inside
inside the cage
of her own making
she dared not escape
would not escape
for how could she
each word
nourished her soul
fed her spirit
without them
she did not exist
could not exist
round and round
the treadmill kept turning
and she kept running
round and round
with each syllable
each inflection
of his thought
encapsulated
in each word
sent by him
to the rat
in her cage
trapped
by
his
words
